11 things I learned in 2008

1. You really have to start working on your Christmas cards in July to get them out on time. Ours are coming...but they might arrive as Valentine's Day greetings.

2. Part of being an adult means accepting that a few of your dearest friends will move away. We miss you O'Deas and Parsons...we still miss you Ross'.

3. Santa Claus sure seems to freak out a lot of kids. Maybe it's time to elect a new mascot. I'm voting for the Christmas snail. He's tardy by nature so it's okay if all your gifts aren't purchased by the 25th or if your cards don't go out until March.

4. There are going to be some people who, for no reason, just aren't going to like you - and that's okay.

5. Fashion trends and economic trends are polar opposites. Bad economy = luxury fashion. If this rule remains for spring things are looking up (despite what all those professional news people are saying on TV). Styles are a little more bohemian, minimalist and "green." So help boost our economy and invest now! (Side note: Although I'm very confident in my statements you should really consult your financial advisor before acting on my advice, as my degree is in apparel merchandising/design and I have no business telling people how to invest their money. But I'm pretty sure I'm right.)

6. Your metabolism can start to slow and wrinkles start to form as early as your 28th year. It just gets harder and more expensive from here.

7. The key to dressing well every day lies in that third piece. For more information invite me into your closet for a personal wardrobe consultation.

8. It's a lot more fun staying in and watching a movie with your husband and two pups than it is to go out on the town. But the occasional night out is important to keep in your routine just to mix things up.

9. As much as I'd try to deny it, I'm a little bit competitive. And that's not necessarily a bad thing - as we pat ourselves on the back for our second place door decoration win in the Albany Historic District Christmas Tour. (The win and credit really go to Marianna O'Dea who designed our door. Thanks Marianna! Same time next year? We're going for numero uno in 2009!)

10. No one ever really talks about vanilla. If you want to be interesting while you're here and remembered when you're gone you have to be a little quirky, a little eccentric and a little different.

11. If no one is talking about you, critiquing you, or challenging you then you're not making a difference.

I am officially suing whitepages.com

I used to love, adore whitepages.com. It was my first stop when I needed an address or phone number. I even recommended the website to friends and family and touted how much easier than an actual phonebook it was to navigate.

This admiration ended today.

I was doing the norm, looking up a few addresses, etc. when I realized how fancy the website had gotten. It now informs you whether the address and phone number listed is the person's work or home number and who else might be residing at their same address. It also lists where else he or she may have lived in previous years, and allows you to purchase (for a small fortune) a brief history of anyone with a social security number.

So I did it. I "whitepaged" myself. At first everything seemed fine. It showed I had a previous address in Collierville, TN (Memphis) and one in Decatur. I trusted their free information was correct and opted not to fork over the $54.99 to be sure.

Then I scrolled down and saw it: "Katherine Klepper.....Age 40." FORTY for craps sake!!! I haven't even celebrated my 30th.

Now, I don't know if this is some kind of sick joke set into motion by a person from my past who works for their company and has it out for me or if it is a legitimate mistake, but no one ages me that many years and screws me out of that many birthday gifts at the same time. Whitepages.com, either fix your misprint by 0400 hours on Thursday or I'm suing your inaccurate booty for defamation of character. In fact, as many people as you have listed on your website I bet we could get a little class action business going.

I am serious. This is not a joke. Fix the lies you have listed on your website.

Lessons Learned by a Football Fan's Wife

Living in the deep south means that after God and family only one thing reigns supreme - college football. Now I just checked my own personal list for verification, and just as I suspected there are quite a few things that rank higher than football in importance. But to avoid excommunication I go through the motions and cheer when everyone cheers, dress my pets in Auburn gear on game days, and agree that the Tigers must stretch the field vertically with its outside receivers to open up the underneath routes, the screens and the running game...whatever that means.

I have grown to enjoy some parts of this Saturday ritual, but even after drinking the Kool-Aid for many (many) years Auburn football still doesn't trump a proper fashion show swag bag in my mind. But marriage teaches you things. Just as Carl has learned the importance of Vogue's September issue, I've learned that Auburn in HD fails in comparison to seeing them in the flesh. And so follows a few other things I've learned in the almost two years of marriage to a footballer.

1. Ask before you invite. Although we females enjoy viewing our favorite sporting events (Oscars, Emmys, MTV Music Awards) surrounded by hundreds of our closest friends, oddly, males don't necessarily want to share the big game with them. Some prefer to experience game day solo - so they can blurt expletives and throw chicken wings at their flat panel without judgement.

2. As a person with an appreciation of aesthetics I naturally have a love for fashion. Carl calls it an obsession, whatever, pre-med/pre-law. Anyway, I've learned that kick-off isn't the time to ask your husband's thoughts on 3/4 vs. opera-length gloves. The only thing you will successfully accomplish is raising his blood pressure.

3. Your husband doesn't care (especially during an extra point kick) that the "HeatGear" technology in the team's uniforms, designed to keep players cool and dry in extreme heat, is similar to the moisture-wicking fabric found in a brand of pajamas for menopausal women.

4. If you walk softly and carry a case of your husband's favorite beer he'll be much more inclined to hand over his credit card, sign off on Botox or agree to give you half of his already minuscule closet space.

5. Football season is the best time of year to recover your dining room chairs, purchase new draperies or paint the entire exterior of your home (just don't touch the room that houses your hubby's favorite TV). Your beloved will be so wrapped up with game day he won't even notice the changes until well into February and by then you will have them paid off.

6. It's considered in poor taste, unAmerican even, to suggest your spouse sell his AU/LSU tickets for a hefty profit so you can buy fabric for new throw pillows for your living room sofa.

7. If there is ever an overtime situation it's best to avoid conversations that begin with: "What do you want (insert dog's name here) to be for Halloween?"

With the better part of a football season ahead of us I'm sure there is lots more to learn. Stay tuned...

A first and a few other things

Bogey recently experienced a first in his short puppy life – bath time. We, like the good parents that we are, captured it on digital camera so we could share this special moment with the world. He was just as scared to death in real life as he looks in the photos.

Please note that this particular bath actually occurred weeks ago so don’t call social services just yet. He’s had several baths since; it has just taken us a while to post pictures. We don’t want anyone thinking we’ve waited this long to bathe the poor guy. What kind of parents do you think we are?!?

We also wanted to share a few photos of Bogey’s latest sleeping position and beautiful new bed. We call it the Spread Eagle Royale. Clearly, he finds his new digs comfy.

Question: When is it appropriate to decorate your pets (and house) for Halloween? Please advise. Bogey really likes sporting his “Trick or Treat” bandanna so we hope we aren’t breaking protocol. I also fished out my “If the broom fits…ride it” tea towel but I don’t think it is Halloween specific.

My Favorite Superheros

So, I was having one of those blah, uninspiring weekends...

Carl has a big test coming up so he was unavailable to entertain me. His nose was constantly stuck inside the pages of "The Complete Internal Revenue Code" and as enthralling as that title may sound it's not really my cup of tea. I was forced to amuse myself.

So there WE were: Blue Bell vanilla bean ice cream, DiGorno four cheese rising crust pizza, Sargento string cheese twisters, Jose Ole grilled chicken & three cheese quesadillas, Maizetos Fiesta Pack tortilla chips, Pace chunky salsa (medium), Rold Gold mini pretzel twists, and Me. Clearly, by Sunday evening I was feeling fat, greasy and guilty...but mostly fat.

In a moment of sheer desperation I frantically tried to decide whether it would be easier to exercise the calories off by alternating laps around Delano Park with sets on our Ab Lounge OR convince the weekend staff at Decatur General's ER to prescribe me a super laxative. (Could they surgically remove the food? Would my insurance cover it?) Instead, I decided to call on my favorite superheros for inspiration - Elle Woods and Cher Horowitz, the stars of "Legally Blonde" and "Clueless" respectively.

These ladies have it together. They're smart, funny, beautiful and know exactly what they want. Cher took a less-than-stellar report card situation and turned it into the chance to help her teachers, and eventually herself, find love. Elle handled getting dumped by her boyfriend with poise and grace - by getting into Harvard Law, winning the case and finding new, better love.

After my four hour movie marathon I felt refreshed, renewed and slightly less bloated. Elle inspired me to give myself a manicure and pedicure (OPI Second Honeymoon), and Cher, to exercise, finalize my outfit selections for the week and "do something good for humanity." My peace of mind was restored. Carl even glanced up from the pages of his textbook to compliment me on my nails!

Softball & Wedding Cake

Thursday the "Albany Angels" took the softball field for the second time. We played the "Lawrence County Outlaws." By their name and county of residence we were sure they would beat the skorts right off of us. Instead, pigs flew, hell froze over and the "Albany Angels" were victorious! (7 - 3!). Carl and I didn't actually get to play (he was in class, I was on the bench), but winning is a team effort, right?

Here I am posing in our cute little uniform. You can't really see in the picture, but my tee shirt is tied at the side in one of those '80s knots. I'm bringing that look back - so spread the word! Also a little side note: I actually wore my pink skort in Thursday's game (not my black one seen here). I know it is incredibly important that I point that out!

Saturday we went to Kate Vickery and Dave Peek's wedding. It was such a beautiful event and really brought back fond memories of our wedding. They used Carla Swinney, the same photographer we had. Whether you wear your heart on your left sleeve or your right, there is one thing in the presidential race on which we can all agree. Not since Jackie Kennedy has First Lady fashion looked so fine!

While Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain share little in common, they both do possess an appreciation of fashion and a smart sense of style. While it's a talking point political analysts often side-step, it may be the one thing that successfully holds my attention for the duration of this year's race for the White House.

Oh the femininity, luscious textures and masterful tailoring...I'm clearing a space on my coffee table for the book right now. These are a few favorites I hope make the cut.

2 - 4 - 6 - 8 Albany A's are Super Great

Tuesday was the first "Albany Angels" softball experience...and I must say we performed far better than I ever expected. We only lost 12 - 2, and that's because they called the game in the forth inning. Had the officials allowed us proper time to warm up I'm sure we would have given "South Decatur" a run for their money. I can, at least, confirm that our team scored far more points in the snappy uniform department. We all had matching skorts! (The girls, anyway.)

In case you're unfamiliar, Albany is the beautiful historic district in Decatur in which we live. Every Friday we meet at the home of our Patron Saint of Albany, Margret Ann Templeton, for "8th Ave. Culture Club." This is a tradition that has been alive for 20 plus years and Margret Ann happens to be our across the street neighbor. At one of our regular "Culture Club" sessions the idea of a neighborhood girls softball team was thrown on the table. We, of course, in all our gin-soaked glory, thought it was the greatest idea and immediately agreed to play. The fact that we'd actually have to play softball never occurred to us...we just thought we'd get to buy a pink glove and platform cleats and that would be the end of it.

The following day much of our roster began back-peddling with excuses of work commitments, family obligations and manicure horror stories. Many of the previous night's most enthusiastic signers were one-by-one raining on our estrogen parade. If Albany was to have a team at all (read: if we were going to get to buy pink gloves and platform cleats) we would have to withdraw our "pink skorts only" rule and recruit our husbands, brothers and cubicle mates. We would have to go co-ed.

And so began what will surely prove to be the most stressful four weeks of our husbands', brothers', etc's lives.

Naturally, I immediately volunteered Carl to coach. I figured he didn't have enough on his plate with intense casework, attending classes to earn his legal masters in tax law and studying for tests and exams. Surely the only thing lacking in his already over-packed 24 hour days were holding tutorials on the fundamentals of softball and recruiting enough decent players so he would never actually have to put us on the field.

So Tuesday arrived and the original "Angels" took their designated places on the dugout's bench. We led a few cheers, heckled the other team, snapped a photo or two and discussed the best place to get your eyebrows waxed. All the normal chit-chat one would expect from a serious sports team. Then something unexpected happened, something we weren't prepared for. Carl actually put us in. I hadn't even bought my glove yet. All the pink ones were on back order.

Now, I'm not one to brag but I'm about to...

Of the two points we scored I contributed in great part to one of them. Up at bat, I blindly swung at the first pitch and by some miracle made contact. The ball bounced between the pitcher and second baseman and again, by some miracle, I got to first base faster than my opposition could get the ball there. And while I was running to first, Carl was running from third to home plate. My hit successfully sent Carl home to score our team's second of two points. Shortly thereafter I was thrown out at second base and the game was over but I didn't care. I had earned my very own RBI.

Post-game we toasted with a celebratory beverage at Hard Dock Cafe, our team's sponsor. Everyone was excited, mostly that we had survived our first game with minor injuries but me about my awesome miracle play.

Our next game is Thursday and based on how well we did in Game One, I predict we get to play at least five innings. I guess this means I need to take my name off the wait list and buy a glove, gasp, off-the-rack.

Only one ear for now, so it might remind one of Jeff Leonard's old "one flap down" home run trot... (obscure Vice-Presidential references combined with obscure baseball references get bonus points) but nonetheless, it is the long anticipated sign of Yorkie development. (Sniff, sniff) I'm kind of going to miss the floppy ears...

The Adventures of Bogey

Since Bogey's arrival we've been getting to know him and introducing him to our friends and family. For the first few days he was a little shy, except with Buffett who he worshiped from day one. (It's taken a little longer for Buffett to warm up to him.) As he became more comfortable with us his "Yorkie-tude" began to shine through and the "Adventures of Bogey" began.

This is what he's been up to...

After watching one episode of MindFreak he tried Escape Artist on for size. It seemed to fit and now we must buy a new crate. We're still not sure how he wiggles out.

His potty training has been going remarkably well, with very few accidents (sorry Liz). Oddly, he has started using his piddle pads as toys, grabbing a corner and running, pad waving behind him like a banner. We're not sure if this means he needs more toys or that we don't have to buy any because he's happy to play with anything.

He still worships Buffett, and Buffett has grown to love him back. He follows him everywhere and does everything Buffett does. If Buffett gets water, Bogey gets water. If Buffett piddles in the far left corner of the yard, Bogey does too. He also loves to cuddle and spoons with Buffett every chance he gets.

My three precious boys napping together. They all woke up just after these pictures were taken because I felt left out and wanted to squeeze in with them. I am so blessed to have such a wonderful husband and two darling pups!

One of Bogey's favorite games is tug-of-war with Buff's tail. It's so funny to watch. He tugs as hard as he can and is so serious about his game. Poor Buff lets him play for a while but eventually gets annoyed and gives us his look that means, "seriously, can you get the kid a rope chew?"

What a Croc!

NO THEY ARE NOT!!!

In fact, after you celebrate say your sixth birthday Crocs are no longer acceptable footwear outside your garden. Ever. Under any circumstances. Even if your home is ablaze, they're sitting by the nearest exit and all other shoes are upstairs.

I'm going to give the six and under crowd a pass. 1.) You don't pick out your clothes anyway so it's not really your fault and 2.) I can understand their appeal as they're easy to put on and take off, inexpensive so your parents aren't investing much on growing feet, and simple to clean - just hose 'em down. But as soon as you can count six candles on your birthday cake it's time to retire them for something a little less plastic.

The rest of you should know better. It is not okay for a 38-year-old to wear Atlanta Braves-themed shoes. Not even if you are en route to Turner field. Even the more understated solid black or brown models are still hideous. Fashion isn't everything to everyone but no one has to settle for ugly.

Many of you Crocsies will argue how comfortable they are. Well, I wouldn't know as I've never let one near my feet, but are they comfortable enough to warrant actually wearing them in public? My house slippers are heavenly but I don't wear them out to dinner.

In addition to their comfort, the gospel according to Crocs, inc. touts their extreme light weight, their ventilation system that keeps feet cool, and their "ultra-hip Italian styling," as well as a few other bells and whistles. Now, I don't know about you but all the normal, non-ugly shoes that have crossed my path have never weighed so much that they hindered my day-to-day activities. And my feet generally maintain a comfortable temperature on their own so a personal air conditioning system in my footwear just seems unnecessary. Lastly, I've been to Italy; there were no Crocs.

So ladies, gents, children over six, next time you're headed out the door and reach for your Crocs or are shopping for new shoes and some Crocsie pressures you to join him on the dark side, please look past all the podiatrists' testimonials, advanced features and the attractive price tag. Look past these things and directly at the shoes. They're not a pretty sight are they? Look a little ridiculous, huh? I beg you. Keep Crocs off our otherwise clean, attractive streets...or prepare to be mocked.

Personal Trainers are Strict

My friend and neighbor is a personal trainer. She and I agreed to trade services: I design and re-work her closet and wardrobe and she kicks my butt into shape before my ten year high school reunion.

From the beginning I made her aware that I might prove to be one of her more "challenging" clients. I hate to work out. Sweat gives me acne, there is nothing I would rather wear less than a rubber-soled shoe, and the only time I feel it necessary to run is if I am being chased by an intruder with a deadly weapon of some sort. She would have to force me to exercise and I encouraged her to do so.

So today I started thinking about what a strict trainer she is. And by strict I mean great, excellent, the very best.

As hard as I try to tap dance around our workout and attempt to bribe her with wine she doesn't give up. It's not her reunion that is fast approaching. These aren't her flabby arms that must look svelte in the unforgiving, cap-sleeve dress I purchased for the event. Yet her persistence and energy endures. I'm pretty positive if I were in her sneakers and had to put up with me I would have walked a long time ago.

So thank you Liz for sticking with and not giving up on me. I praise you for your patience and dedication to the cause. I promise to get serious about our workout schedule and not fake illness or debilitating injury...starting Monday.

I want a pretty blog

After blog-stalking for the last couple hours I've come to the conclusion that our blog is not up to par. It is far less aesthetically pleasing than every other blog I read. So here is my question. How do I make our blog pretty? Please advise.

If Your Pet Sheds, FURminate Him

I silently freaked out when Carl came home recently toting what I believed to be a much too expensive dog brush. I, of course, kept silent because all too often I arrive home toting one thing or another, none of which we really need, and Carl rarely scolds me.

Excitedly he began detailing his adventures at Pet Smart and started listing off all the advantages of owning this expensive piece of yellow and black plastic. He opened with its name, knowing I'd think it was cute and forget he just spent my microderm money on a dog brush. "It's the FURminator," he told me. Shoot, he knows me too well. The name is genious!

Fearing I wasn't completely convinced of the FURminator's magic, he ushered Buffett and me outside for a demonstration (or "FURmination"). The single rake down Buffett's back that produced an entire fist full of golden hair was all it took. I was a believer. And I still am!

Since its introduction into our lives the FURminator has reduced Buffett's shedding by about 80%. I no longer have to pick up random hairballs each time I pass through a room. How the brush works is a mystery to me, but I don't need to know the science behind it. It works. In fact, this little dog brush has already proved its worth far beyond the 24k pricetag it came with. Never again will I question (even silently) Carl's canine hairbrush purchases.

So, if your pet sheds run to Pet Smart and get a FURminator. It will be the best thing you'll ever spend your microderm money on.

Our little Maxwell passed away yesterday. We miss him so much. He loved so much and had such a great and strong personality. The house feels so empty without him. It just doesn't seem possible that he is gone. Everything in the house reminds us of him, from his favorite purple squeaky bone, to the top of the couch where he would sit and keep watch out the window. Maxwell, you'll always be in our hearts. We love you "Lil Buzz."

Toss out that old saying that "less is more." This spring, more is more!

Layering necklaces is the season’s hottest trend in jewelry. Designers like Rebecca Lankford have tailored their collections so several pieces can be worn together, as well as easily mixed with other lines.

While the idea of wearing multiple necklaces is bohemian inspired, when worn correctly this look is as equally appropriate with a business suit as it is with a t-shirt and jeans.

As with all things fashion related, there are a few guidelines but they’re easy to follow and hard to forget. Follow these five simple rules and you’ll master this trend without looking like you tried.

1. Stick with odd numbers. Interior designers will advise this when decorating your home. The same goes when decorating yourself. Choose three, five or even seven necklaces. For some reason, the unbalance seems to balance your look.
2. Go for multiple lengths. If every necklace is the same length the only thing you’ve created is a big mess. A variety of lengths allows each piece to be displayed and shows there’s a little method behind the madness.
3. Choose delicate pieces that complement rather than compete. Several understated necklaces say chic and polished, but lots of oversize, loud garb will make you look like a gypsy with Attention Deficit Disorder. It’s okay if one necklace makes a stronger statement than the rest, but your jewelry shouldn’t fight for attention.
4. Mix various textures, metals and styles. Pair gold with silver, pearls with leather cords, turquoise with diamonds and casual with formal.
5. Wear pieces that are meaningful or personal to you. Of course you want to appreciate each necklace on an aesthetic level, but if asked about a particular piece it’s nice to have a story or memory to share. Lankford’s collection of crosses are so simple, yet they symbolize so much.

A much needed Saturday night out

We've been M.I.A. recently in the blogger world because there hasn't really been anything exciting to blog about. Work, bills, clogged bathtub drain, work, yada, yada. Things have been pretty boring. So last night we decided to have a night on the town with friends Liz and Bo Brown and Cookie and Allen Stoner.

We started with drinks at the Browns', who happen to be our next door neighbors. Then we headed off to Simp McGhee's restaurant for a late dinner. As always, it was divine! We even broke our diets and splurged on dessert. Finally, we wrapped up the evening with a little rock-n-roll at The Brick. It was a fun and much needed night out. Oh, and we were so excited to get out and about that we marked the occasion with a photo shoot. Following are a few shots from our fun evening.

Luce Goes Skydiving

Yesterday I received several pictures from one of my dearest friends, Lucy House. She and her boyfriend, John David, recently went skydiving and the photos she sent documented her adventure. Since you'll never find me jumping out of an airplane I'll live vicariously through her. Luce, you're a braver chick than I. These photos are of Lucy and the skydiving expert.

Team Central

I'm so proud of Carl and the other members of Central United Methodist's basketball team. Thursday night they were named city champ runners-up.

In the final game they challenged St. Paul's Lutheran Church, a very stacked team, and held their own until the final seconds of the game. If I'm not mistaken, I believe one of St. Paul's players was actually picked up by the Nuggets, an NBA team, mid season. Now, I'm not positive of the legitimacy of this story but it's the word on the church basketball circuit and makes for a good story so we're going with it.

I'm also proud to report that no technical fouls were called on anyone from either team. It was much more satisfying spending our $10 on a post-game margarita rather than on a technical fine.

Now I think the guys are getting geared up for softball season.

And to be a bit more braggadocios...the following photos are of my hubby during his days at Sardis High School. Carl received an array of awards and still holds a record or two that has yet to be broken.

And in separate but related news...Moms have to be great multi-taskers. During Central's game I watched in amazement as moms Ashley Collins and Marsha Taylor effortlessly 1) cheered on their husbands, 2) snapped photos of the game, 3) distributed healthy snacks to their two-year-olds, Abby and Dawson, 4) intercepted all snacks dropped on the gym floor before their tots could consume them, 5) entertained said tots with various toys and shiny objects, 6) wrangled them back to their seats each time they rushed the court attempting to join the team and help their dads, and 7) carried on an adult conversation...ALL AT THE SAME TIME! I was very impressed. I can barely apply mascara and drive at the same time.

Our backyard - where trash sits and grass dies

Some of you may know that Carl and I have been working on our 104 year old house for about a year. Well it came to my attention this morning, when I ventured into our backyard for the first time in, oh, I don't know, 7 months, that the entirety of our work has been confined to the interior of our home.

Now, this was our choice. We felt we should work from the inside out, but I didn't quite realize the devastation factor of our backyard. Thank goodness our neighbors can't see. Well, they might be able to catch a glimpse if they peer out their second floor windows...and for this view we afflict upon them, I apologize.

I did actually take a few photos with the intention of posting them on our blog. However, I am far too embarrassed. If a landscape architect were to draw inspiration from our backyard, he or she might describe the style as "frat house meets crack shack." Everything that was once living is now dead. The formerly beautiful bricked patio is now a storage space for trash and other home rejects on which there is something disgusting currently growing. I'm too scared to touch it, so there it sits. And keeping with the tradition of white trash backyards, there is a keg. The only thing missing is an inoperable pickup truck on cement blocks.

So, my mission is clear. I vow to have a luscious, green backyard by spring (summer if the situation is far worse than I think). It will be conducive to outdoor activities like grilling, and will be free of rusted paint cans, molded beer capsules and the unidentifiable mass I fear might spawn into some toxic creature that feasts on the neighbor's cats. I will plant flowers, trim hedges, buy a sprinkler and do whatever you do in a backyard.

After our project is complete we'll post photos, pre and post. Only when the "before" shots are no longer our reality can I muster the nerve to put them online.

So with that, does anyone have ideas on how to create an HGTV comparable backyard on a budget of zero dollars? Tips and advice are welcomed and encouraged.

Clown Shoes

Okay, I'm all about fashion forward designs but Prada's Spring 2008 shoe collection is just hideous.

The label has always been sophisticated, but with a slight edge and bohemian undertone. It was the successful marriage of a boardroom executive to a Stevie Nicks impersonator. What happened?

The '08 ready-to-wear collection makes their mark, but I can't even pretend to admire the footwear line...heck, I can barely scan over the hideous images on my computer screen. I mean, there's almost a Teva thing going on in more than one pair.

If you refer to page 30 of the March 3rd issue of Star magazine (in which I'm sure you all subscribe) you will see I am not alone in my condemnation of these shoes. Star puts Angie Harmon on the issue's worst dressed list. And what, may I ask, does she have on her feet?

Did MiuMiu have a full-on fashion meltdown? Are we rationing aesthetically pleasing designs in this time of war? I'm sure the quality and craftsmanship of the product is still superb. I bet their price tag is still solid gold. So what's the deal? I blame Bush for this. Somehow it's his fault.

Jazz at its Best

Last night Carl and I had a date at the Princess Theatre. Jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves performed and she was truly one of the most amazing acts I've ever seen. Her voice almost brought me to tears.

Reeves performed her own originals, as well as old favorites like "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)," a song popularized by Frank Sinatra, and "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" by The Temptations. Her improvisational skills are unmatched by anyone I've ever seen. She effortlessly inserted lyrics into her songs about being in Decatur and her delicious dinner at Curry's restaurant.

Reeves is a four-time Grammy winner, one of which she won in 2006 for best movie soundtrack for the film "Good Night and Good Luck," directed by George Clooney. She also performed in the film and last night told the audience a little about this experience...especially the part about working on set with Clooney.

Hopefully she'll be back soon and if she is Carl and I both recommend you see her perform.

The Words a Fashionista NEVER Wants to Hear...Or Does She?

"You need to wear more sensible shoes." This is no joke. This phrase was actually uttered to me, and by my doctor, no less.

Starting from the beginning...my back may have been giving me a little trouble and I might have previously been diagnosed with a slight case of scoliosis. Surely she's not implying I toss out my favorite Claudia Ciuti two-tone, patent leather booties. No, she wants me to "mix it up" and create a "two inches or less" category to my shoe closet. What a smart doctor. A prescription to buy new shoes. This is the most ingenious thing I've ever strutted across.

I Broke My Lenten Promise...

Twice!

God was probably not very proud of me yesterday.

As I killed time perusing the aisles at Lowe's I stumbled across a great looking, reasonably priced, jute rug. Now several rooms in our home are in need of a rug, we're just waiting to come across the perfect one for each space...that and a windfall of money. Well, one of the aforementioned rooms that desperately needs a floor covering is Carl's "man room" or his "ESPN Room" as he named it. Just like the name suggests, the room is very casual, very sporty, very leather theater seating and flat panel-esque. This sturdy jute rug would fit in perfectly and it wasn't of a quality where I'd mind if the puppies wollered on it.

I dialed friend and interior designer Marianna to get her opinion. Shoot, she didn't have her phone with her. What should I do? I gave up shopping for Lent. Why the heck was I looking at rugs? What was I even doing at Lowe's? What am I, some sort of retail masochist?

The next thing I knew the rug was in my trunk and I was en route to our house. It all happened very quickly. The time period between Lowe's aisle 13 and my front door is all very hazy. I totally believe I was in a full on blackout.

Once inside my home I started getting a major case of the guilts. First, I wasn't even supposed to be shopping. Second, the rug was for Carl's room, shouldn't he at least get to see and vote on it before it's spread out on the ESPN room's floor? I mean he did agree to me redecorating every other room in the house to my liking and his only request was that he got one room - and here I am taking over his only room. How inconsiderate am I?

Two hours later the rug was back on the shelf at Lowe's. I bet Carl would be proud of me...if he even knew about it. The fact that the rug was way too small for the room made it a little easier to return.

Now I'm really not sure how this happened, but somehow during my return trip to the hardware Mecca, enough wood blinds for our master and guest bedrooms ended up in my trunk.

Absentee Blogger

Oh my goodness I haven't blogged in days! I do have a good excuse...I've been sick with whatever crud that's been going around. Yuck! Glad to be feeling (almost) back to normal. Anywho, there haven't been too many developments in the lives of the Cole family this week.

Thursday night Carl's basketball team, Central United Methodist, challenged First United Methodist and won! The teams squared off twice previously and First beat us both times. Well, Central was ready last night and we were victorious! Carl played great, racking up the points and playing fiercely on defense. I must say it was one of the most intense church-league games I've witnessed, as Carl almost lost an eye and members of both teams were badly scratched and bruised. Hopefully there will be no hard feelings...I mean it is church league! We did, however, learn that technical fouls cost $10 each.

Reminder: tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. is the Dianne Reeves concert at the Princess Theatre. Following the performance you'll have the opportunity to meet the Grammy-winning jazz vocalist at an artist reception held in the Sexton Lobby of the theatre. Exciting, Long Weekend

We've had a very exciting, long weekend! It started Thursday with Valentine's Day. I ate lunch with my pals Liz and Cookie at Backe Door Gourmet. Cookie surprised me with a valentine I've been lusting after...Laura Mercier Bare Beige Glace lipgloss. It's Cookie's signature shade and I've been wanting it for a while. I even scribbled the color down on a napkin and placed it in my planner for the week after Easter so I could purchase it as soon as I could shop again. She knew this and being the dear that she is, got one for me. Thanks Cookie! I'm so excited about it and have been applying it constantly!

That evening Carl took me out for a romantic dinner at our favorite local eatery, Simp McGhee's. Afterwards, we moved on to Cafe 113 for cosmos and to listen to the acoustic tunes of Tim Tucker. Tim is a great friend of ours who plays solo, as well as with his bands, Tim Tucker and the Uh Huhs and the Cheesebrokers. It was a special first Valentine's Day as a married couple.

Saturday evening Carl participated in a charity basketball game for Habitat for Humanity of Morgan County. Carl and several other locals (including friend and college basketball player, Ryan O'Dea) went head-to-head against the Harlem Ambassadors. It was quite a show. If you've ever been to a Globetrotters game it was very similar! Lots of acting, theatrics and games, little actual basketball play. While the Habitat Home Team didn't win, they sure put up a good fight! Following are a few photos from Carl's game.

After a hard day at work...8 hours on 4 inch heels is hard...I arrived home and spotted a tiny box on my front porch. Now, I knew I hadn't ordered anything recently, as I've given up shopping for Lent. Had I ordered something a while ago, it been on back order and I forgotten about it? Nope. What could it be?

And what to my wondering eyes did appear? A UPS box filled with Bug Catcherz gear!

The awesome Karen Carter, executive vice president of Bug Catcherz, had sent me a care package straight from the company's hive. It was filled with "No See 'Ems," revolutionary blouse front closures, "No See 'Ems Too," hold-in-place adhesive strips, and "BUTTerflies," hold-in-place adhesive dots. The package even contained a tiny, plastic bug just for fun!

The idea behind Bug Catcherz? This company wants to know what "bugs" women. They'll catch and fix it! "We eliminate annoying problems that bug women," reads their website. No word yet if they have a product that puts the toilet seat down when your husband forgets. :)

"It's been 7 hours and 16 days..." Well, not really but it feels like it!

Lent arrived last week with Ash Wednesday. I always try to give up something and this year it was shopping AND wine...two of my favorite things. This proves extra hard because our spring collections are pouring in to Carriage House daily and they are to die for! Normally when I can't shop I drown my sorrows in a glass of wine...and guess what, I can't do that either. Plus, our Frank Family chardonnay is getting low and I can't shop so I can't replenish the supply. I'm in a religious and moral cul-de-sac. What's a girl to do? Suck it up I suppose. So the count down begins until I can shop and drink wine again...I guess the shopping will be online so I can do both at the same time. Let me know if any of you sacrificed something for Lent. I'm totally interested in starting a support group!

P.S. just because I can't purchase the next hot-to-trot thing doesn't mean I won't be searching for it...so stay tuned.

Thursday night my Mom, Dad and Gram joined me for a night at the Princess. Carl had basketball practice and couldn't attend. Well, if you weren't there you missed out. The New Shanghai Circus performed and they were amazing! All I have to say is I left wanting to join a yoga class. Those girls could contort their bodies into positions that pained me (yes, the girl above really performed this move). I'm telling you...check it out if they're ever in your neighborhood. Oh, and it was a sell-out for the Princess!

Great Music, Great Food, Great Stationery

Jesse Harris performed Thursday at Decatur's historic Princess Theatre. Beforehand, Carl and I hosted a pre-show gathering at our home. We hope everyone who came had a nice evening and hope they'll check out future performances at the theatre. Harris is an amazing talent who has written for Norah Jones and Willie Nelson, among others. He won a Grammy for "Don't Know Why," the song that helped launch Jones' career. If you missed the show please check out his website and listen to his haunting ballads.

Friday I helped my dear friend Ashley Ashwander at her store The Paper Chase. She has such an amazing space. She carries the most adorable invitations and stationery and has lots of unique gifts. If you collect Vera Bradley luggage this is your spot. She has an entire section dedicated to the collection. I left with a set of wonderful Printess Douthit cards, the book, "This Little Piggy Went To Prada," (wait for an entire post dedicated to this fabulous book!) and ordered the cutest chocolate notecards displaying my initials. I hope she'll ask me back! I sure enjoyed the day.

That evening we celebrated friend John Penley's 30th birthday with dinner at Simp McGhee's Restaurant. Unfortunately, Carl couldn't be there because he was preparing for a deposition. He missed a fun time. Sue Ellen, John's wife, organized everything and there was quite a crowd. The meal, as always, was delicious. If you ever have the opportunity to dine at Simp's jump at it. I'd recommend the Chicken Speegle or Medallions of Beef Tenderloin. Carl's favorite is the lamb. Red Zeppelin Syrah is a great wine to pair with dinner.

Right now this is my favorite nail lacquer. It's from O.P.I.'s Russian Collection and is a deep, intense red that looks HOT, HOT, HOT on tips and toes this cold-weather season.

Lazy Sundays are the Best!

I've written before about our Sunday ritual...basically we laze around, watch whatever cheesy movies are on TV and eat junk food. It's our one day of the week we can just relax. Well, this week we sort of started "Lazy Sunday" a little early. We had plans Saturday night to attend Decatur Cotillion Club's TOTALLY 80's PARTY! Instead we were bums and just relaxed. But I can't wait to hear about the party from everyone.

The puppies sure did enjoy our time at home. Buffett didn't leave our side. He's a big cuddler. (Notice the Lay's chips in the above background...ha!

Always part of Lazy Sundays!). Maxwell wanted to play constantly. He never tired. If you have a Yorkie you know what I mean. (Yes, I know he is in desperate need of grooming. He has an upcoming appointment). And Carl and I enjoyed our downtime napping, snoozing and sleeping. Perfection!

Date Night

Tonight we had a little date night at the Princess Theatre. The Del McCoury Band performed and they were fabulous. We are now officially bluegrass fans. Ashley and Charlie Ashwander and Marianna and Ryan O'Dea also came out and joined in on the fun.

It was great. The show was completely sold out and die-hard bluegrass fans were shouting song requests to the band. We didn't know too many of the songs they played but enjoyed all of them. We also learned that the core band members were born in York, PA, the same town in which my dad was born.

Artist Sloane Bibb also designed an original silk-screen concert poster, all of which were signed and numbered. Proceeds benefit the Princess and its arts education program. Several are still available at $30 each. The Cole family opted against a poster because "we have no blank wall space," but I'm still working on getting the go-ahead to buy one.

Anyway, if the Del McCoury Band is coming to your area please check them out. You won't regret it.

Here's to Another Great Year!

First, I'd like to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my dear friend Jennie-Marie. Friday was her birthday...tomorrow is mine. So tonight we celebrated with the girls with dinner at Panera. It was my first time to dine there and it was delish! At first I panicked because they were out of bread bowls but I'm now glad they were. I tried some chicken/mozzarella/focaccia bread thing. It's my new favorite sandwich. I'm pretty sure I'll be back there tomorrow for a repeat.

But what was even MORE delish than the sandwich was my birthday gift from Carl. He gave it to me a day early and it is FABULOUS! He surprised me with a Mere bag. I've been wanting the "Two-Timer" but didn't expect to get one for my b'day. In case you're unfamiliar, Mere is my life-long, dear friend Meredith Leach. She's a fabulous interior designer in Washington D.C. and recently launched her first collection of handbags. The leather is butter-soft and the design is so inventive. (A small clutch attaches to the outside of the large tote so you have a smaller purse option for after work dinner or drinks. GENIUS!)

Friday Carriage House hosted a Lafayette 148 trunk show featuring their lucious resort, spring and summer collections. It made me long for warm weather, bare legs, short skirts and patio dresses. So here are a few things to expect this warm weather season.

NAVY

Absent from the fashion scene for close to a decade, navy is back. In fact, it's so back you can consider it "the new black." And unlike many other colors, almost everyone looks fabulous in navy. Pairing it with crisp white makes for a nice combo but beware, it can easily look "sailorish." Make sure you keep it feminine. Opt for a flouncy or tulip skirt rather than high-waisted pants.

METALLIC

Popular this fall and winter, metallic is still hot for spring and summer. It can easily dress up the most casual of outfits.

LIGHTWEIGHT LEATHER

Typically leather and suede are strictly cool-weather fabrics but this year designers have used them in their spring and summer collections. They're just keeping it lightweight. We're seeing lots of laser-cut skirts and jackets in metallic and bright, punchy colors.

SKIRTS

Skirts are everywhere and no single style dominates. From A-line to boot styles, and minis to maxis. No other garmet screams femininity quite like a skirt (well, except maybe a dress). And get excited, many have pockets and waist detail like sashes and ties.

EMPHASIS ON THE WAISTLINE

Low rise has dominated the industry for years. It's time for change. Designers are cutting trousers, jeans and skirts higher...THANK GOODNESS! It's time ladies showed off their trim waistlines and this silhouette can do it.

ETHNIC INFLUENCES

You'll see lots of tribal influences with bold patterns, bright color stories and intricate beading. It's very exciting. Designers have mastered the art of merging African and Indian concepts with ladylike simplicity.

PATIO DRESSES

Lightweight, cotton and ankle-length, patio dresses are perfect for a Sunday brunch, Bunko with friends and even a trip to the grocery...depending, of course, on how dressy the piece is.

COLOR

Think candy store. Bright pinks, greens, corals and ESPECIALLY YELLOWS are back and it's a nice change from the dull grays that are so popular at the moment. The front room of Carriage House looks like Kool-Aid packets exploded!

Friday we had a little date night and went to see "Capitol Steps" at The Princess Theatre. We've seen it before, but this year was the best. If you've never experienced it we highly encourage you to find the show nearest you. If you're unfamiliar, it's political humor at its best. And with the presidential election nearing they've pulled out all the stops. Their acts are very current, updated based on the scandal of the day. Most of you know we've been renovating, remodeling and revamping our home. It looks great (thanks mostly to interior designer Marianna O'Dea who has been the biggest help)! I'm not sure Carl knew what he was getting into when he agreed to take on this project. But now that it's mostly finished I think he likes it. My favorite piece is the Victorian-style sofa Carl's step-mom, Carol, gave him that we reupholstered in a fabulous leopard-print. The wood-work is beautiful. If our house were to catch fire, after getting all living creatures safely outside it would be the first thing I'd try to drag out of here.

Lazy Sundays
These are our days to just relax and unwind. We pretty much spend the day watching cheesy movies and eating good 'ole greasy fast food. It's good for the soul!

Helluvagood French Onion Dip

This is Carl's favorite snack. I'm not much of a French onion fan but apparently it's the best. All I know is you can smell it from the sidewalk, but he swears by it.

Frank Family Vineyards 2006 Chardonnay

It is Creme Brulee in a bottle. We first tried it at a wine tasting at Cafe 113. Then on our honeymoon we visited the actual vineyard in Napa and fell in love with it all over again. Even if you're not a chardonnay fan, we normally aren't, you'll love this. It is our absolute favorite and we always try to keep a supply on hand.

Jones Soda

Carl recently introduced me to Jones Soda. The flavors are delicious and what a cool company. The labels feature photographs submitted by fans of the drinks. Anyone can send in as many pics as they want. If they like your photo they'll put it on their bottles. I'm trying to get Carl to send in a few of his.

Based in Brooklyn, NY, this homegrown company started by printing hooded sweatshirts featuring the names of all the different neighborhoods in the NYC area so residents could "represent" their 'hood. Now you can have anything under the sun printed so you can express yourself. In addition to hoodies, they have tees, hats, bags, dresses, underwear and doggie couture. Maxwell has his very own Neighborhoodie. (P.S. this couple was featured on neighborhoodies.com as Neighborhoodie of the Day...how cool, huh?!?)

The Carnegie Visual Arts Center hosts Fri. @ 5 the third Friday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. Basically, it's a great time to mingle with friends, enjoy good food and spirits and view the current exhibit. There's no charge for those who are members of the Carnegie and only a $15 donation asked of guests. It's open to everyone 21 and older. We highly recommend you check it out!

The Weather Outside is Frightful

Today is one of those days in Decatur, AL. Thunderstorms...High Winds...Tornados...and the puppies are not amused. You can see the displeasure (read: fear and a little boredom) on their faces. I couldn't even get them to play with their toys. I tried to cheer them up with a few M&Ms but once I ran out their cheerful moods turned blue again.

Buffett does not like the thunder. He misses Dad.

It truly was the most wonderful night of my life. A highlight was my Dad swinging his tux jacket over his head and grooving down the dance line!!! If you know my dad, you know this was momentous. But above all, this night was great because it meant I got to spend my life with the most wonderful man in the world.
